DP-Outreach: its Name, Intent and Purpose

1. Outreach (Evangelism) to the Judeo-Christian Culture

The name, "DP-Outreach" was chosen because it pursues evangelism rather than ministry. The keyhole symbol expresses what evangelism does: it unlocks your true self possibilities and reveals the original ideal world which God intended in the beginning.

Mirroring the intent of the book, Exposition of the Divine Principle, DP-Outreach focuses primarily on the Christian culture.  It works through the Bible. DP recognizes the central role of Christianity to receive the returning Messiah.

In the present era, people demand logical and fair beliefs from the Bible and the Church.  DP-Outreach continues the deductive reasoning and systematic logic of Exposition to explain hidden mysteries in the Bible and the universe.

DP prepares people to receive the Second Coming of Christ -the True Parents of humankind. This is the work of evangelism. DP performs a role similar to John the Baptist.

Once people recognize and believe in the True Parents of humankind (the Reverend and Mrs. Moon), the DP will have accomplished its purpose of evangelism.

What is next?  Ministry.  This is internal guidance. Ministry addresses attitudes and behavior.  It deals with the life of prayer and service.  Ministry seeks a healthy lifestyle through effective traditions.

2. Outreach (Evangelism)
to Second Generation Unificationists

Children learn the values and beliefs of their parents.  This changes as children's brains develop critical thinking skills and the desire for self-autonomy in the teen years.

The second generation Unificationists go through three stages of searching for truth and meaning in their young adult lives.

First, they seek to simply understand Unificationism.  Secondly, they might choose to believe in Unificationism.  Thirdly, they might try and apply it into their world.  There is no guarantee that one stage will automatically lead to the next.  Nonetheless, the stages are fixed.  Let's look at each of these steps separately.

DP-Outreach helps teen Unificationists understand their inherited faith.  DP-Outreach provides DP information for them to probe, challenge and inquire in a safe environment.  This is evangelism.

If the information is reasonable, systematic, and resonating with their own sense of justice and fairness, then the teen or young adult may choose to believe -this is ownership over one's faith. They join the community of faith centered on True Parents.  They choose the norms, values and boundaries as a framework for their dreams and aspirations.

DP-Outreach videos and powerpoints want to be part of that search and discovery -especially in the first stage. DP-Outreach is evangelism.  It can help young Unificationists to understand and read the Divine Principle book better.

three stages of spiritual growth

In the second and third stages, ministry (in-reach) is more important.  These Unificationists seek internal guidance on how to overcome bad habits and create good ones.

They need hope and encouragement.  They need unconditional support. They are learning to pray.  They are moving away from being in need and more towards being needed by others.

Working with Second Generation Unificationists in the summer workshops as a DP lecturer and parent figure for several years in South Korea's Cheong Pyeong training center (2009-2012), I realized the youth were on different levels.

Some wanted to learn and know (first stage).

Others were ready to decide if this truth (and spirit) was right for them or not (second stage of choosing ownership).

Still others (college age) were on the third level -wanting to know what kind of calling or mission they might choose based on their own unique skills, talents and interests.

DP-Outreach is not ministry (internal guidance).  Instead, it address the reality of God, purpose, spirit world, fallen nature and restoration.  This is evangelism.

One can argue that 'unlocking one's true self' is ministry. For me, unlocking the true self is about discovering True Parents and learning our original purpose and value.  Becoming the true self involves spiritual growth and that requires internal guidance (ministry).
